In two studies conducted by Roig (1997) of 316 and 231 undergraduates respectively, the students were turn over one original passage and 10 others that had been rewritten. Some of the passages were right paraphrased; others suffered from plagiarism. The researcher found that, while some 74% set the paraphrases, 40-50% did not identify the plagiarized versions and instead marked them as only paraphrased. This indicates that a large number of students do not really know the difference between good paraphrasing and plagiarism.
