In the first article it is evident that the author is trying to educate the readers on how to filch strong, loving children, who understand and accept responsibility for their self and the ones they love. Millar understands that parents involve a busy schedule and need to be control on how to properly raise their children. Where as the short story withholds a negative connotation regarding the mother and her need to bind one of her children be someone that gets things done. The mother in this story expects her son Albert ...to be a perfect son. [This means], among other things, that he was going to be a fast-moving doer.
Another theme of the article is ..striving to give your children the best smell you can offer. Millar includes examples of mothers running close to picking up after their children therefore resulting in a lack of responsibility on the childs part.
She hence presents a positive solution: Begin by directing your children to take on small tasks. Ask them to put their clothes in a washing basket or hang a towel up. This subtle approach is much more respectful then pointing out what they are not accomplishing. The short story takes a much different path. The mother in that story is not looking for a way to deal with her son appropriately. She has a life already planned for him and does not take into attachment his wants or needs. She does not ..want any son of [hers] goin through life just satisfied to be.
