While at Cornell University, Kurt enlisted into the Army and was sent to the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the University of Tennessee to study mechanically skillful engineering. While there he became associate editor in the student newspaper, beginning a larger role in his writing career.
It was not until Kurt finally went to the Battle of the Bulge, in the 106th metrical unit Division, that he would soon have the most devastating turn on his writing and life. The Dresden firebombing scorched almost everything on the fall out and leveled a city in its entirety. Kurt, now a POW, was and lucky enough to survive in a unpredictable underground prison which was originally a slaughterhouse centerfield locker. Germans called it Schlachthof Funf or Slaughterhouse Five, for which one of Kurts most illustrious books would be named and show how much that event affected him.

This horrific image would stain Kurts mind, and have the impetus for him to become a humanist, and a pacifist.
In his subsequently life, Vonnegut formally became part of the organization American Humanist Association.
