Ode to a Nightingale

According to Charles dark-brown, the Ode to a Nightingale was written one saltation morning in the garden of Wentworth Place, Hampstead. He recalled:
In the border of 1819 a nightingale had built her nest near my house. Keats matte up a continual and tranquil joy in her nervous strain; and one morning he took a chair from the breakfast-table to the grass-plot chthonian a plum-tree, where he sat for two or tether hours. What Brown saw was probably an early draft rather than the complete ode. At first reading this ode appears to be a undefiled example of Wordsworths definition of poetry: the spontaneous overflow of strong feelings.
The nightingale, a bird whose song is heard chiefly at night, had been a traditional subject for poetry from the Middle Ages. In classical legend the nightingale, or Philomel (literally, lover of song), was a beautiful young woman whom the gods turned into a bird after she had been raped and had her expression cut out by her attacker; hence the acquaintance with regret and with unhappy love which figures in many poems about nightingale.

Both Wordsworth and Coleridge, in poems which Keats probably knew well, reserved the tradition of the melancholy nightingale and described its song as an exuberant burst of joy.
For them, as for many poets before them, the nightingales song was a reference of poetic inspiration and stimulus to meditation on, for example, nature, love, and mortality.
