In 1929, Woolf was asked to give a lecture to the female students of Cambridge University, on the issue of Women and Fiction. The lecture, based on two essays that she had written to address the display case, subsequently were paired to become the book A live of one and only(a)s own. Woolfs thesis was simply that; A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.
