The Plague hit Europe around 1347 and caused mass death. It is estimated that well three-fifths to one quarter of the population were killed. (Wilcox, 1975, p. 34) This resulted in a policy-making breakdown. umteen of those in ruling families were wiped out. There was widespread business organisation and upheaval. The declining population also led to economic crisis. Banks were left in ruin when they could not collect on debt owed to them. The scarcity of worker led to an increase in wages, and businesses lost their profitability. (Wilcox, 1975, p. 34) The people of this time felt a sense of helplessness. They abandoned their families for fear of decent ill themselves. Some sought comfort and reassurance from the Church. There was tiny comfort to be found there as well.

Many clergy had fallen victim to the Plague and survivors could offer little fancy or explanation for the tragedy. The Church during this time was under crisis as well. They had lost many clergy as a result of the sick Death and the Pope was an ineffectual leader. He was in Avingnon and not Rome.
